    Perception of local shape from shading

    Theoretically, metric solid shape is not determined uniquely by shading. Consequently, human vision has difficulty in categorizing shape when shading is the only cue. In the present research, subjects were required to categorize shaded quadric surfaces. We found that they were rather poor at this task; they confused hyperbolic and elliptic (both convex and concave) shapes easily. When a cast shadow visually indicated the direction of the illuminant, they were able to notice the concavity or convexity of elliptic shapes. However, they still confused elliptic and hyperbolic ones. Finally, when an animated sequence of eight intensity patterns belonging to one quadric shape had been displayed, the subjects were able to categorize the quadrics. However, the results are still quite moderate. Our experiments indicate that local shading structure is only a weak shape cue when presented in the absence of other visual cues

    Identifying Haptic Exploratory Procedures by Analyzing Hand Dynamics and Contact Force

    Haptic exploratory procedures (EPs) are prototypical hand movements that are linked to the acquisition of specific object properties. In studies of haptic perception, hand movements are often classified into these EPs. Here, we aim to investigate several EPs in a quantitative manner to understand how hand dynamics and contact forces differ between them. These dissimilarities are then used to construct an EP identification model capable of discriminating between EPs based on the index finger position and contact force. The extent to which the instructed EPs were distinct, repeatable, and similar across subjects was confirmed by showing that more than 95 percent of the analyzed trials were classified correctly. Finally, the method is employed to investigate haptic exploratory behavior during similarity judgments based on several object properties. It seems that discrimination based on material properties (hardness, roughness, and temperature) yields more consistent classification results compared to discrimination based on the acquisition of shape information. © 2013 IEEE

    Pictorial surface attitude and local depth comparisons

    We measured local surface attitude for monocular pictorial relief and performed pairwise depth-comparison judgments on the same picture. Both measurements were subject to internal consistency checks. We found that both measurements were consistent with a relief (continuous pictorial surface) interpretation within the session-to-session scatter. We reconstructed the pictorial relief from both measurements separately, and found results that differed in detail but were quite similar in their basic structures. Formally, one expects certain geometrical identities that relate range and attitude data. Because we have independent measurements of both, we can attempt an empirical verification of such geometrical identities. Moreover, we can check whether the statistical scatter in the data indicates that, for example, the surface attitudes are derivable from a depth map or vice versa. We estimate that pairwise depth comparisons are an order of magnitude less precise than might be expected from the attitude data. Thus, the surface attitudes cannot be derived from a depth map as operationally defined by our methods, although the reverse is a possibility

    Haptic Discrimination and Matching of Viscosity

    In three experiments, viscosity perception of liquids using the sense of touch was studied. The first two were discrimination experiments in which Weber fractions were determined for a number of viscosities spanning the range of what is encountered in daily life, and for two ways of perceiving viscosity (stirring with a spatula or with the index finger). For high viscosities, Weber fractions were around 0.3, whereas they increased for lower viscosities. For low viscosities, discrimination performance was much worse with the finger than with the spatula. In the third experiment, subjects matched liquids perceived with these two methods, which resulted in biases of around 80 %. Control experiments and force measurements were performed to find an explanation for these results. It was concluded that the relationship between perceived and physical viscosity is steeper for stirring liquids with a spatula than stirring with the finger

    Shape from stereo : a systematic approach using quadratic surfaces

    We used quadratic shapes in several psychophysical shape-from-stereo tasks. The shapes were elegantly represented in a 2-D parameter space by the scale-independent shape index and the scale-dependent curvedness. Using random-dot stereograms to depict the surfaces, we found that the shape of hyperbolic surfaces is slightly more difficult to recognize than the shape of elliptic surfaces. We found that curvedness (and indirectly, scale) has little or no influence on shape recognition

    We zien niet altijd alles zoals het werkelijk is: parallelle lijnen zien er bijvoorbeeld niet altijd parallel uit en afstanden worden systematisch fout geschat. De vraag is of de wereld van de tast soortgelijke vervormingen kent. Via experimenten aan de waarneming van de haptische ruimte (tastruimte) is gebleken dat haptisch parallel zeker niet fysisch parallel is. Wel is er een duidelijke systematiek te vinden in de afwijkingen. De verklaring wordt gezocht in de invloed van egocentrische (Iichaamsgebonden), niet-fysische referentiestelsels
